Excursions!

Be GroundBreaking: Excursions!

Chloey Mincey: "Friday was one of the most fun days I have had in school. In Excursions, I went to Mrs. Riley's classroom for Cosmetology, nail art. Painting my nails made me feel confident, because I usually never paint my nails, and I did a great job painting!"

We all want real-life experiences for our children in the classroom. We know that many of our children come from limited experiences, aside from those brought to them in the classroom. To be groundbreak, S.L. Mason Trailblazer teachers created "Excursions"

Excursions

Excursions are held generally on Fridays and last for about an hour. Each member of the professional team presents an activity to complete with the students. This past Friday, Ms. Collins led guided painting, Ms. Williams taught board games, Ms. Knuckles led yoga for beginners, Ms. Sermons coached volleyball, Mrs. Riley led Cosmetology, and Ms. Jackson taught skills of cooking. The students and teachers enjoyed this time with students, that were not only from their own class, but from multiple classrooms.

Please read some testimonials of faculty and staff who led in our first "Excursion" from this year!

"When I went into the classrooms, the students were so engaged, smiling, and having fun, EVERY single one of them!"
Danielle White, Assistant Principal

"They all enjoyed their excursions. I had several students who were enjoying a field trip, but also wanting to stay at school for excursions! It was a hit, they love in-school excursions!"
Christie Sermons, Fifth Grade

"When my students came back from culinary arts with Ms. Jackson, I asked my students what the word mince means and she said to cut into teeny-weeny pieces"
Nadja Collins, Second Grade

"My kids need to come back to the next one so they can actually make a cooking dish. Please! The students are begging to come back to cooking! I cannot wait to see if they can follow a recipe, they assured me they can!"
Lasharon Jackson, Fourth Grade

"Let's invite other grade levels to participate in Excursions with us! We know it promotes one-hundred percent student engagement!"
Danielle White, Assistant Principal

3- In the month of December we won the Dreambox!!!

4- In the month of February we won Dreambox!!!!

You can win the dreambox competition if you have the best average in your grade. Every time we, 4th grade Trailblazers,  had a chance to get on Dreambox, we would get on Dreambox. At the parties we eat pizza, juice, chips, and sometimes cupcakes.

We love dreambox and if you wanna win an awesome party like that be sure you’re doing Dreambox 3 times a day for at least 20 minutes.

My First Month of School
 by:Amir
My first month of school was amazing! I am glad we are learning how to Code and play Prodigy. When we have grievances, we have to solve our problems with each other. Also, we learn life science this year, so we are going to be looking at things through a microscope. It’s going to be so much fun!

On the first day, Mrs.Sermons told us she wants us to be independent. Because of that, we don’t have to ask to go to the restroom, get supplies, or take care of our needs unless she’s teaching. We even have flexible seating, so you can sit anywhere  you feel comfortable learning. This requires us to cooperate and share with each other. You should always use proper communication when talking with my teacher, so we can all share in a discussion. For example, we need to know what words are, and what they mean. She does not allow us to say “ABC order” we have to say alphabetical! We have the coolest 5th grade teacher ever! I hope you enjoyed my thoughts.

Cells

Do you know what cells even are???  Cells are the basic building blocks of life. They are also basic unit of all living things. In science we have learned about cells, and they are really cool and interesting. For instance, there are plant and animal cells. In fact, humans have animal cells. There are many parts and functions in both animal and plant cells. In case you didn’t know, cells are not in non-living things such as tables, chairs, rugs, etc.

The Bill of Rights
By: Hannah

Do you know about the Bill of Rights? The Bill of Rights are the first ten amendments to the Constitution. An amendment is a change or an addition to something. My awesome teacher Ms. Sermons taught me the about the Bill of Rights, so I will explain them further.
The Basics of the Bill of Rights

3rd:You don’t have to house soldiers during peacetime & war
4th: Freedom from unreasonable search & seizure
5th:You have the right to Grand Jury, NO double Jeopardy, and the right to not testify against yourself (plead the 5th)
6th: You have the right to a speedy trial
7th:Right to trial by Jury for all non-criminal cases for anything 20 dollars or more
8th:Freedom from cruel and unusual treatment and excessive bail
